Random Notes

I've been doing some research into what types of workouts are most effective for both general, broad-based fitness as well as fat burning. CrossFit is a unique way of looking at fitness. Its creators advocate, basically an anti-routine fitness, with the justification that nature "punishes the specialist". Their results appear to be good, and the occasional workouts I've done of theirs have been brutal.

This and some other digging has led me to wonder if perhaps there could be some way to incorporate randomness into the fitness routine (if you will allow the seeming logical incompatibility of that statement). What about playing a sort of exercise powerball, with choices of different types of exercises (cardio, legs, chest, abs) that were then picked at random on any given day to form a workout. The pool would stay the same, but the workout on any given day would be a function of the luck of the draw. By picking from different categories, you would ensure that one part of the body wouldn't accidentally be left out, but you would also avoid the lack of improvement that comes with a routine.

Most coaches I have worked with have tackled the problem by having a shorter workout routine that lasts for perhaps three weeks, and changes just as the body is getting adjusted. The problems I can think of from the start with my idea stem from making sure the appropriate number of sets, reps and weight are used, and making sure that for someone on a time crunch, each workout takes about the same amount of time.

More to come. Feel free to add your thoughts. . .
